Beading a Cab
Making a Beaded Cab Pendent
Easy instructions for beading around a cab

AFTER YOU HAVE CHOOSEN THE TYPE OF PIECE YOU ARE DOING(PENDANT,BARRETTE,ETC.) AND THE CABOCHON(S) YOU WILL BE USING, THE FIRST THING TO DO IS GLUE THE CAB DOWN. ( WE'LL BE DOING A SIMPLE PENDANT HERE.) WE SUGGEST ROUGHING UP THE BACK OF THE CAB AND USING E-6000 GLUE. LET CURE AT LEAST AN HOUR OR SO.

THREAD A SIZE 12 BEADING NEEDLE WITH ABOUT TWO YARDS OF SIZE O OR OO BEADING THREAD THAT YOU HAVE WAXED WITH BEESWAX. KNOT THE END. SEW UP THRU THE BOTTOM OF THE STIFF STUFF AS CLOSE TO THE CAB AS POSSIBLE. PICK UP THREE BEADS(SIZE 11 OR 15) AND SLIDE DOWN NEXT TO THE CAB. SEW BACK DOWN THRU THE STIFF STUFF AT THE VERY END OF THE THREE BEADS.

NOW SEW BACK UP THRU THE STIFF STUFF BACK WHERE YOU FIRST STARTED; AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST THREE BEADS. SEW THRU THE BEADS. NOW PICK UP THREE MORE BEADS AND PUSH THEM DOWN THE THREAD TO LAY AT THE END OF THE FIRST THREE. SEW DOWN THRU THE STIFF STUFF. COME BACK UP THRU THE STIFF STUFF 4 BEADS FROM THE END. SEW THRU THE LAST 4 BEADS. THIS SEWS THE FIRST THREE TO THE NEXT THREE. CONTINUE IN THIS MANNER ALL THE WAY AROUND THE CAB.

TO START A NEW ROW NEXT TO THIS ONE, SIMPLY SEW UP THRU THE STIFF STUFF NEXT TO THE FIRST ROW AND BEGIN IT AGAIN.CONTINUE UNTIL YOU HAVE IT AS LARGE AS YOU WANT IT.

WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, SEW DOWN THRU THE STIFF STUFF AND KNOT WELL. CUT OFF THREAD. CUT THE EXCESS STIFF STUFF AWAY CLOSE TO THE BEADWORK, BEING CAREFUL NOT TO CUT ANY STITCHES. NEXT, TAKE A PIECE OF YOUR CHOOSEN BACKING MATERIAL(DEERSKIN, CHAMOIS, SNAKESKIN, ETC) AND LAY YOUR BEADED CAB DOWN ON IT.

TRACE AROUND THE CAB AS CLOSE TO THE BEADS AS POSSIBLE WITH AN INK PEN. CUT OUT YOUR BACKING MATERIAL RIGHT ON THE INK, SO YOU ARE JUST BARELY CUTTING THE INK AWAY. NOW TAKE A PIECE OF ACCU-FLEX ABOUT 18 INCHES LONG AND, KEEPING THE ENDS EVEN, BEND IT IN TWO. YOU WANT A SHARP BEND OR KINK RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. SLATHER THE BACK OF THE BEADED CAB WITH E-6000. CENTER THE ACCU-FLEX ON IT SO THAT THE BEND IS RIGHT IN THE CENTER. PLACE YOUR BACKING MATERIAL OVER THIS AND PRESS DOWN FIRMLY. LET CURE ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO. NOW YOU NEED TO DO EDGE BEADING ON IT.

WE'LL DO A SIMPLE ZIPPER EDGE FRINGE FOR THIS ONE. THREAD YOUR NEEDLE WITH ANOTHER TWO YARDS OF WAXED THREAD; KNOT THE END AND TRIM OFF EXCESS THREAD. FROM THE TOP OF THE CAB DOWN, SEW DOWN THRU THE LAST TWO ROWS OF BEADWORK.(YOU WILL NEED TO SEW AT AN ANGLE, TO COME OUT THRU THE BACKING AT IT'S VERY EDGE.) THIS WILL HIDE YOUR KNOT BETWEEN BEADS. GO THRU THE BACKING AT THE VERY EDGE. PICK UP THREE BEADS AND SLIDE THEM DOWN NEXT TO THE BEADWORK. SEW DOWN THRU THE VERY EDGE OF THE STIFF STUFF AND BACKING.

TURN YOUR NEEDLE AROUND TO FACE YOU AND SEW UP THRU THE LAST BEAD.(NOT THE BACKING THIS TIME) PICK UP TWO MORE BEADS. SEW BACK DOWN THRU THE VERY EDGE OF THE STIFF STUFF AND THE BACKING MATERIAL ABOUT HALF A BEADS SPACE AWAY FROM THE FIRST THREE BEADS.

TURN YOUR NEEDLE BACK TOWARD YOURSELF AND COME BACK UP THRU THE LAST BEAD.(NOT THE BACKING) THIS FORCES ONE BEAD TO STAND UP ON TOP OF THE OTHER BEADS. CONTINUE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BEADWORK.

YOUR LAST STITCH WILL BE ONE BEAD. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, TAKE YOUR NEEDLE UP THRU THE SECOND TO LAST BEAD, COMING UP THRU THE STIFF STUFF BETWEEN THE LAST TWO ROWS OF REGULAR BEADWORK.

SEW THRU THE ENTIRE LAST ROW OF BEADWORK, ALL THE WAY AROUND. YOU WON'T BE FINISHING THIS WITH A KNOT; YOU ARE SECURING YOUR THREAD WITHIN THE BEADWORK ITSELF. PULL YOUR THREAD VERY TIGHTLY AND CUT AS CLOSE TO THE BEADWORK AS POSSIBLE. PULLING IT STRETCHES IT SLIGHTLY SO THAT WHEN YOU CUT OFF THE THREAD, IT PULLS ITSELF BACK INSIDE THE BEADWORK TO HIDE IT.

NOW STRING YOUR ACCU-FLEX WITH WHATEVER BEADS YOU LIKE, FINISH WITH A CLASP, AND YOUR DONE! WHEW! TRUST ME, DOING IT IS ALOT EASIER THAN EXPLAINING HOW TO! ONCE YOU HAVE DONE IT ONCE, IT WILL SEEM LIKE THE EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD! NOW YOU CAN START EXPERIMENTING WITH DIFFRENT PATTERNS OF BEADWORK! (DON'T WORRY..WE AREN'T GOING INTO THAT RIGHT NOW!)
